After seeing several of you asking for a powdered laundry version of our Homemade Laundry Soap, I went on a search for the best recipe. After reading several blogs and comments from our fans, I found out that the dry recipe is actually quite simple to make.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda (Not Baking Soda)
- 1 cup Borax
- 1 bar Fels-Naptha, 1/2 Zote, or (2) bars Ivory soap
- Essential Oil for fragrance (optional)

Jessica’s Favorite Batch of Homemade Laundry Detergent:
- 1 cup Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda (Not Baking Soda)
- 1 cup Borax
- 1 bar Fels-Naptha
- 10 drops of Lemon Essential Oil
1. Grate one bar of Fels-Naptha or 1/2 bar of Zote Laundry Soap using a cheese grater. Fels-Naptha has been around for over 100 years. It is used as a laundry stain remover and pre-treater and works well on oil-based stains. For this version, I decided to try Zote because I have heard great things about it and the scent reminds me of summers in Mexico visiting my Grandma. Zote Soap has non-abrasive ingredients so it can be used on delicate clothing. It contains optical brighteners and no chlorine, so it bleaches without fading colors.
2. Next, add 1 cup of Borax to the grated soap. Borax helps to remove tough stains is going to give a boost of cleaning power to the Fels-Naptha or Zote soap.
3. Add 1 cup of Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda. (Don’t confuse this with baking soda). Washing soda has a higher alkaline level which helps to act as a solvent to remove a range of stains.
4. Place ingredients into a food processor (or blender). If you are planning to use an Essential Oil, this is where you would add a few drops. Then pulse/grind for about a minute, or until it has the consistency of fine powder.

To Use:
Use 1-2 Tablespoons per load. It may not seem like it’s a lot, but this recipe contains no fillers, like store bought detergents do.
Homemade laundry detergent will not suds up like ordinary detergent, making it safe for front-loading HE washers.
SAFETY NOTE: Since you may be reusing already labeled containers, it is important that kids know it is NOT food. Please label containers accordingly.
